Madrid keep the pressure on Atletico at the top then while Getafe have to improve quickly to stay out of trouble. Both teams will take this result and move on. That’s all for now. Goodbye!
Madrid rise to second in La Liga with this win, hauling two points back on leaders Atletico after they drew 2-2 with Celta Vigo. Madrid are five points behind Atletico now but the league leaders have two games in hand. It’s going to be a tough ask to catch them. Getafe are 13th. They won’t be too bothered by this defeat, although they’re now winless in four league games.
Real Madrid ease past Getafe with second-half goals by Benzema and Mendy. It was an efficient performance by Zidane’s men who didn’t exactly set the world alight but did enough to see off a rather tame visiting side. Madrid will have stronger tests than this.
90′ + 2′ FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 2-0 GETAFE
90′ + 1′ Benzema steps up to take the free-kick which is quite some way out. The striker goes for goal but it’s high and wide and not very handsome. And that will be all!
90′ There’ll be two added minutes of this. Vinicius offers some late excitement by dribbling down the right and getting taken out by Kubo.
88′ Alena is one of the few Getafe players who seems to believe a comeback is possible. The midfielder skips over Modric’s challenge and passes possession on, only for his teammates to let the ball go out for a throw.
86′ Marcelo removes the captain’s armband and hands it to Benzema. The 20-year-old Chust enters the pitch.
85′ Getafe earn a corner down their right as Nacho goes safety-first with a deep cross and puts it ouf play. Before the corner’s taken, Madrid will make a change. Marcelo will go off.
83′ Madrid tease and probe in Getafe’s final third without really getting anywhere. They don’t really need to at this stage.
81′ Maksimovic’s free-kick from deep sails harmlessly over all the players in the box and goes out of play. That’s wasteful by Getafe in a game where they haven’t had many chances at all.
80′ There’s a coming together between Arambarri and Modric in midfield. The free-kick goes Arambarri’s way.
78′ Getafe have still only had one shot in this match – that effort by Angel at the start of the half. The visitors have shown very little in an attacking sense.
76′ Madrid substitution. Isco is on for Asensio.
75′ Vinicius goes down and gets a free-kick after a challenge by Alena. This game feels pretty much over as a contest.
73′ Bordalas decides that further changes are needed. The Turkish striker Unal is on for the hardworking but ineffectual Cucurella.
73′ Getafe also make a change at centre-back as Timor comes on.
71′ Mendy receives a yellow card for a poor challenge on Kubo. Mendy’s looked clumsy here but he’s managed to get a goal, so how can we argue?
70′ Madrid force a corner off Olivera. Not long after, Benzema receives a pass inside from Marcelo and fires wide from outside the box. His shot wasn’t too far from the far post.
68′ Getafe’s resistance lasted an hour but now the visitors need to offer something else. They won’t want to suffer a third consecutive thrashing.
66′ That interplay between Marcelo and Mendy was fantastic. Madrid have surely secured all three points with that second goal.
66′ GOAL! REAL MADRID 2-0 GETAFE! That’s a lovely goal by the hosts! Mendy runs into the box after passing out wide to Marcelo. Marcelo finds Mendy inside the six-yard box. Mendy slips on the wet turf but manages to find the far corner!
64′ Varane is challenged too aggressively for the ball by Alena who concedes the free-kick. Madrid have gained full control of this game now.
62′ Benzema has now been involved in 15 goals in his last 19 La Liga games against Getafe. That goal’s a nice way for him to end his recent drought against these opponents.
60′ That was a great cross by Vinicius who’d been Madrid’s brightest player up to this point. Now we’ll find out how badly Getafe want to chase the game.
60′ GOAL! REAL MADRID 1-0 GETAFE! Benzema breaks the deadlock! Getafe don’t fully clear the free-kick and Madrid restart the attack. Vinicius has all the time in the world to cross from the right and Benzema nips in front of Cabaco to power a header into the net.
59′ Benzema wins a free-kick as he’s fouled by Cabaco. What will come of this?
57′ We’ll have to see how those changes affect both teams. Both have been a little more attack-minded since the restart.
55′ Madrid also make a change. Marvin, who’s squandered a few good crossing opportunities, is replaced by the youth product Arribas.
55′ Getafe’s last change for now sees Portillo replaced by Alena.
55′ Next to head off is Getafe’s other striker Angel. Kubo comes on.
54′ Getafe make a triple change. Mata replaces Hernandez up front first.
53′ Asensio crosses in and Nacho heads over from the right of the box. Both sides are preparing changes having last played just a few days ago.
52′ Chakla’s booked for bringing down Asensio to the right of the box. Madrid eventually force a corner off Cucurella.
50′ Hernandez gets fouled by Mendy in his own half and Getafe can breathe for a moment. Madrid have started the half with a little more purpose.
49′ Chance for Madrid! Benzema finds space to the right of the box and fires across Soria. Soria gets down low to tip the shot away! Madrid get two consecutive corners but Getafe clear each time.
47′ Angel gets Getafe’s first shot at goal from inside the box from Suarez’s cross. Courtois isn’t worried though as it’s off target.
45′ The second half gets underway. No changes by either side at half-time.
Barring the odd flash from Vinicius, Madrid’s forward line has been fairly quiet, especially Benzema. The Frenchman hasn’t scored or assisted in his last four league games against Getafe. Zidane’s team need to step up a gear in the second half if they want to win this.
It’s level at the half-time break between Madrid and Getafe with Madrid dominating the play. Madrid have had a few good chances, most notably Modric’s shot which forced Soria to save with his legs. Otherwise Getafe have been fairly comfortable, albeit a non-threat going forward.
45′ HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 0-0 GETAFE
45′ Madrid’s free-kick doesn’t lead to much. The hosts need to test Gefate a bit more here.
44′ Cucurella’s penalised for a crude challenge on Marvin. It briefly looks like the referee will get a card out of his pocket but a free-kick is all it will be.
42′ Vinicius chases after Marcelo’s ball down the line but can’t retrieve it. Madrid soon regain possession and Benzema scoops way wide of the left-hand post.
40′ Benzema’s speculative shot from outside the box deflects off a defender and into the arms of Soria.
39′ Arambarri buys a free-kick in midfield by leaning into the challenging Benzema. Getafe are continuing to hold their own.
37′ Soria keeps the score level! Madrid switch the play quickly to Marcelo. The wing-back passes inside to Modric whose shot is straight at Soria. It goes out for a Madrid corner which Getafe clear.
35′ Madrid keep hold of the ball as Getafe drop back. Portillo wins possession and succeeds in earning the visitors a throw-in.
34′ Getafe have offered close to zero attacking menace yet but they’re doing a decent job of staying solid. They’re not making things easy for Madrid.
32′ Chance for Madrid! Madrid take the corner short and Marcelo cuts back from the left for Varane who clatters a shot wide in a crowd of bodies.
31′ Vinicius looks to cut inside and gets fouled. Modric floats in the free-kick and it looks to hit the head of a Madrid player. The referee points for a corner though.
29′ Mendy recovers from a slip to win a free-kick. The Frenchman is lucky as he’d miscontrolled a long ball with Angel nearby.
28′ Madrid work the ball out wide once again to Marvin whose cross is caught by Soria. Getafe have got the centre of the pitch blocked up.
26′ Chakla knocks out for a throw-in with Marvin lurking then Asensio’s cross is blocked. Marcelo picks up possession and fires wide from outside the box.
24′ Madrid have had 70 per cent possession in the opening half of this half. Most of it isn’t a bother to Getafe though.
22′ Marcelo’s shot inside the box is blocked. Next, Marvin has the flank to himself and fires in a first-time cross from the right of the box. It’s got too much pace on it to find anyone in Madrid white.
20′ Madrid look to be playing a 3-4-3 with Marcelo and Marvin as the wing-backs. It’s limiting Getafe and their 4-4-2 so far.
19′ Madrid are being patient with Getafe having offered no real threat yet. Vinicius gets a free cross in on the overlap and Getafe hurry it away.
18′ Vinicius strays offside as Benzema tries to find him down the left. Mendy gets tugged down the same flank and wins a foul.
17′ Asensio’s cross causes no real concern to Getafe’s defenders who clear it at the second attempt. Still, the traffic is distinctly one-way at the moment.
15′ Marvin shows a burst of speed down the right, forcing Olivera to come across and foul him. Asensio will take the opportunity to send this free-kick in.
13′ Benzema’s run into the channel gets Madrid a corner down their left. Asensio fires the cross in and Benzema crashes a header against the top of the crossbar! The ball bounces out of play for a Getafe goal-kick.
11′ Madrid are taking risks in passing the ball around their own penalty area with Getafe so keen to press. The hosts are managing to get away with it so far, but it only takes one mistake to look foolish.
10′ Mendy carries the ball out of the box as Getafe fling the ball in. Marvin chases after a pass over the top but Getafe’s goalkeeper Soria has got the situation under control.
8′ Madrid take the corner short and don’t create a real shooting opportunity. Still, Zidane’s team are looking focused so far.
7′ As expected, Madrid are starting to assert themselves on this game. Vinicius wins a corner for the hosts.
5′ An early chance for Madrid! The free-kick comes in and rebounds to Casemiro at the near post. It looks like a tap-in for the Brazilian but he somehow conspires to fire over the crossbar.
3′ Madrid win a free-kick down their left as Vinicius beats his man but gets taken out by the covering Cabaco.
2′ Getafe start brightly as Oliveira gets caught offside from Hernandez’s throughball down the left.
1′ Getafe get this game underway!
The two sides are out on the pitch here in Madrid. Madrid are in all-white, Getafe are in all-blue.
Madrid have not lost any of their last 13 meetings with Getafe in La Liga, winning 12 of them and keeping a clean sheet in the last four. Getafe have avoided losing just two of their 15 games away to their rivals. Madrid will be confident but can Getafe spring a surprise?
Zidane makes two changes to Madrid from their 2-1 away victory over Huesca at the weekend. Marvin and Marcelo are in for the suspended Kroos and injured Odriozola. Madrid only have eight fit players on the bench, including two goalkeepers. There are seven changes to Getafe from their 3-0 defeat to Sevilla. Their centre-back Djene is suspended.

Madrid’s cross-city rivals Getafe sit mid-table in La Liga at the moment, albeit just four points above the relegation zone. José Bordalas’s team enter this game bruised after two away thumpings by Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla. The visitors will be keen not to get beaten that badly three times in a row on their travels.
Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid are struggling to keep pace with league leaders Atletico Madrid after winning just three of their last eight games in all competitions. Madrid’s last home game saw them blow a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Levante. More consistency is needed from the hosts if they don’t want to trail behind a resurgent Barcelona too.
