OKEGOAL.COM - It's finally confirmed who will be the Chelsea captain after Cesar Azpilicueta moved to Atletico Madrid.
James himself has donned the captain's armband several times during Chelsea's pre-season tour.
Judging by his commanding performances throughout the pre-season, new Blues coach Mauricio Pochettino officially gave the position to James permanently.
Pochettino said on Wednesday (9/8/2023) local time, “This is a decision that I and the club made.”
On his first big decision since becoming Chelsea manager, the manager known as Poch admits he made the right decision.
“We are very pleased that Reece will lead the team this season. He is setting an example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been evident throughout the pre-season.”
“He is proud to wear the captain's armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our team with his own style and ideas.”
It is planned that the owner of the number 24 shirt will start his new role as captain of the club on Sunday (13/8/2023).
However, Reese James admits that he is ready to bear this burden and trust.
“I am very excited to take on this role and responsibility,” said James.
“I know I have to fill a big place because in the past we have had great captains here but I am really excited.”
“I've been at Chelsea most of my life. I started here when I was six, and going through the academy wasn't easy. But to be captain is a great feeling for me and my family.”
James himself is no stranger to Stamford Bridge given that his entire career to date has been spent at Chelsea.
He made his Chelsea debut at the start of the 2019-20 season, during Frank Lampard's spell on the sidelines.
Now he has nearly 100 Premier League appearances for Chesley, and he's reached nearly 150 in all competitions.
Since breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge, he has also established himself as a senior international for England.
He made his senior tournament debut at Euro 2020, but was forced to miss the 2022 World Cup due to injury.
