Atlético Madrid v Real Sociedad Live Commentary & Result, 12/05/2021, Primera División | OkeGoal

Atletico’s eyes now turn to Madrid before they welcome Osasuna at the weekend. Madrid travel to Granada next. If Madrid fluff their lines one more time, Atletico can prepare to get the title party started. If not, they’ll have to fight just a little bit longer. That’s all for now. Goodbye!

Atletico extend their lead at the top of LaLiga with just two games left to play. They’re four points clear of Barcelona now with a superior head-to-head record. Real Madrid are now realistically the only side that can catch them. Real Sociedad stay fifth in the table. They worried Atletico late on here and still look good value for a Europa League place.

Atletico Madrid get a crucial win to move them one step closer to the LaLiga title. Simeone’s men won the game in the first half after going 2-0 up, but were made to suffer a little in the second. Real Sociedad stepped up after the break, eventually pulling a goal back through Zubeldia, but Atletico managed to hold out for the three points.

90′ + 3′ FULL-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 2-1 REAL SOCIEDAD

90′ + 1′ Atletico have three minutes to hold on. Bautista accidentally handles the ball, relieving the pressure on them for a few seconds.

89′ Portu gets a split second to shoot in Atletico’s box but Atletico valiantly block again. The hosts will have to focus on holding out now.

87′ Atletico chase Real’s defenders down, looking to wind down the clock. Real have changed to what looks like a 3-5-2.

85′ Real Sociedad have now had more shots than Atletico in the match, 13 to Atletico’s 12. Nine of those have been in the second half.

Martín Merquelanz

Assist

83′ Atletico will be disappointed that they didn’t deal with Merquelanz’s corner. The last 10 minutes will now be nervier for the hosts.

83′ GOAL! ATLETICO MADRID 2-1 REAL SOCIEDAD! Real finally pull a goal back after they win a corner off Trippier. Merquelanz sends it in and it lands to Zubeldia in the six-yard box who slots it past Oblak. Is a late Real comeback on the cards?

81′ Suarez leaves the pitch after an influential shift up front for Atletico. Lodi comes on to shore up Atletico’s left side.

79′ If Real were going to get a goal in this game it should have been then. Seconds after Portu gets loose down Real’s right to fire in a low cross, forcing Oblak to boot clear, Portu comes again. This time he hits the inside of the right post. The ball rebounds to him but he can’t get his feet together! Atletico block Bautista’s follow-up shot and Merquelanz blazes over.

77′ Suarez nearly seals the victory for Atletico, sccooping wide from the edge of the box as Real get caught at the base of their midfield. Atletico are almost there anyway.

75′ All these substitutions have made the game a little scrappy. That’ll suit Atletico just fine.

73′ Saul’s jig is also up. Kondogbia wanders on for the final fifteen minutes or so.

73′ Atletico are bringing on some fresh legs of their own now. Felix takes the place of Correa, one of their goalscorers.

71′ Trippier is well-placed to cut out another Real attack. Suarez makes a nuisance of himself up front and gives away a foul.

Martín Merquelanz

Mikel Oyarzabal

69′ Real’s captain Oyarzabal also goes off. Merquelanz takes his place on the left.

69′ Real Sociedad make some more changes. Zubeldia comes on to replace Elustondo.

67′ Real are getting closer to scoring. Bautista flicks Oyarzabal’s corner to Portu at the far post. Portu goes for the first-time volley and tempts Oblak to tip it aside. Bautista’s shot from the following corner loops nicely into the Atletico keeper’s arms.

65′ Merquelanz is getting ready to come on for Real. Guridi reaches the byline and forces another corner for the visitors off Felipe.

63′ Real Sociedad win another corner but Atletico aren’t bothered in the slightest as Pacheco nods wide from Oyarzabal’s cross. The hosts initially counter then elect to keep possession when they realise the shot isn’t on.

61′ Carrasco is inches wide after racing onto Correa’s inviting cross and shooting from a difficult angle at the far post. Atletico are still looking more likely to score next than Real are.

Roberto López

Nacho Monreal

59′ Monreal also gets the hook with Atletico finding plenty of joy down his flank. Real’s young attacking midfielder Lopez replaces him.

59′ Here’s La Real’s second change of the game. Fit-again Pacheco comes for Sagnan in defence.

58′ Straight after Suarez is dispossessed Saul goes for glory and fires wide. Real are about to make some changes.

56′ Suarez takes a touch in the box and is about to pull the trigger but is quickly closed down. Real are playing better but still not enough to worry Atletico too much.

54′ Suarez tries to latch onto Correa’s cross from the right but it rolls harmlessly out of play at the far post.

52′ Zaldua shoots from outside the box but it’s no real concern to Oblak who makes a decent save.

51′ Real Sociedad win two corners in a row. They don’t get anywhere but they’re giving Atletico more to think about now.

49′ Suarez has a crack at goal from the centre of the box as Real give the ball away. Remiro gets down well to keep it out. Suarez should have done better there and he knows it.

47′ Real get to test Atletico straight away as Saul brings down Oyarzabal. Atletico deal with the free-kick and try to counter, but Correa’s offside from Suarez’s throughball.

47′ Atletico get the second half going. How will Real’s substitution change things?

46′ Real make a substitution at half-time, and it’s an odd one. Bautista replaces Isak up front.

A victory here would be big for Atletico but there are still 45 more minutes to play yet. Isak has been Real’s biggest threat, inspiring two decent saves from Oblak. He’s the only player who’s had more than one shot on target. Can Real create a few more decent chances for the Swede in the second half?

Atletico head in at half-time two goals to the good and looking comfortable. The hosts were typically clinical in that first half, picking off Real Sociedad through Carrasco and Correa. Sociedad, particularly Isak, have tested Oblak a few times but haven’t been able to put Atletico under any sustained pressure.

45′ HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 2-0 REAL SOCIEDAD

43′ Atletico pass up an opportunity to get a third goal by half-time as Correa can’t find the right pass to Carrasco. Real got caught out in a dangerous position once again.

41′ Carrasco’s role in this Atletico side is fascinating. The Belgian’s like a floating wing-back, with Hermoso coming out wide when Atletico have the ball and tucking back in when they don’t.

39′ Guridi’s pass is intercepted and Atletico try to break forward again. Real put a stop to it, bringing down Correa.

38′ Atletico see the corner out easily enough. The hosts get another chance to float the ball into Real’s box but can’t create a goalscoring chance from it.

36′ Real come close to pulling a goal back! The visitors put together some silky stuff in front of Atletico’s defence and Isak darts into the box to force Oblak into a smart save. It will be a Sociedad corner.

34′ Oyarzabal commits handball. Atletico enjoy a prolonged spell on the ball until Trippier’s touch is off and he lets it roll out for a Real throw-in.

32′ Real look to get themselves back in the game right away. Isak spanks an effort towards goal from the edge of the box from Barrenetxea’s pass. Oblak tips it aside.

30′ Suarez has been involved in 11 goals in 12 games against Real Sociedad now with five goals and six assists. The Uruguayan’s only been a more prolific provider against two other sides in LaLiga.

28′ Suarez’s throughball there was delightful but Correa made the finish look easy. Atletico look in the mood to rack up goals.

28′ GOAL! ATLETICO MADRID 2-0 REAL SOCIEDAD! Correa doubles Atletico’s lead with a cool finish into the bottom left corner. Suarez played a lovely throughball to slip the Argentine into the right of the box.

26′ Real Sociedad are getting nowhere fast. Atletico are experts at soaking up pressure and terrifying their opponents on the counter-attack.

24′ Atletico win a free-kick near the right touchline as Zubimendi brings down Llorente. Trippier swings it in and Saul’s header is off-target. Real successfully clear.

22′ Real Sociedad are finding it hard to play through Atletico who are playing a very narrow 5-4-1 out of possession. All the visitors can do is pass out wide before losing the ball again.

20′ Oyarzabal has a pop from outside the box and Atletico successfully block it. Real think they’ve won a corner but the decision goes Atletico’s way.

18′ Barrenetxea gives Oblak his first work to do, spooning an effort into the arms of the Atletico goalkeeper from inside the box.

17′ Llorente’s pass there was a peach. Atletico waited for their moment and Carrasco was clinical. The Belgian was calmness personified.

16′ GOAL! ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 REAL SOCIEDAD! Atletico have gotten off to a flyer! The hosts take the corner short and keep possession. Llorente picks out Carrasco who takes a great touch with the outside of his wrong foot and rolls the ball underneath Remiro.

15′ Carrasco beats Zaldua for pace but the full-back recovers well to put the ball out for Atletico’s first corner of the game.

13′ Atletico are quite content to let La Real dictate the game and spring forward on the counter. Real Sociedad have had 63 per cent possession of the ball so far.

11′ Carrasco jinks into the box from the left and looks for a teammate but Real Sociedad clear their lines.

9′ Atletico really want an early goal! Llorente races through on goal after being set free by Correa. The forward takes aim for the bottom corner and forces Remiro to rush out and block. Remiro can’t hold the shot but smothers it at the second attempt.

7′ Llorente is fouled by Oyarzabal just in front of La Real’s box. Suarez steps up to swish the free-kick towards goal and isn’t too far wide of the post, hitting the side netting.

5′ Atletico get an early opportunity as Suarez fires over from the centre of the box after latching onto Llorente’s pass. Suarez looks up from the turf in exasperation. That would have been the perfect start for the hosts.

3′ Both teams gently scope each other out. Llorente is penalised for accidental handball.

1′ The visitors La Real get this game underway!

The two sides are out on the Wanda Metropolitano pitch. Atletico are in their preferred red-and-white striped shirts and blue shorts. Real Sociedad are wearing their white-and-blue home colours.

Atletico have lost just one of their last five league games against Real Sociedad and are unbeaten in seven against them at home, keeping a clean sheet in five of those games. However, Real Sociedad haven’t lost their last three visits to Madrid teams. This could be a tight affair. With Barca and Real Madrid breathing down their necks, it’s one Atletico will especially feel they need to win.

Atletico make just the one change from their 0-0 draw with Barcelona. Saul replaces Lemar. There are five changes to Real Sociedad from their 2-0 win over Elche five days ago. Pacheco has recovered from illness and is fit enough to make the bench.

SUBS: Vitolo, Moussa Dembele, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Jose Gimenez, Renan Lodi, Ivo Grbic, Joao Felix, Lucas Torreira, Sime Vrsaljko, Hector Herrera.

ATLETICO MADRID (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Kieran Trippier, Stefan Savic, Felipe, Mario Hermoso; Marcos Llorente, Koke (c), Saul Níguez, Yannick Carrasco; Angel Correa, Luis Suarez.

Real Sociedad will be looking to make the league leaders’ lives difficult though. Imanol Alguacil’s visitors have also rallied lately and sit fifth in the table, the highest they can finish now. However, they still need to hold off Real Betis and Villarreal to secure a Europa League place for the second season in a row. One more win would just about do it.

Atletico are three wins away from becoming Spanish champions once again. Diego Simeone’s men have firmed up again at just the right time, keeping a clean sheet in four of their last five LaLiga matches, and will have been buoyed by Barcelona only picking up a 3-3 draw away to Getafe last night after picking up a valuable point at Camp Nou last weekend.
